What is an elder anyways?

Jesus cares so much for his people that he has called specific people to dedicate themselves to caring for his church. He calls these people, “Elders”.

“…he (Paul) sent a message to the elders of the church at Ephesus, asking them to come and meet him. 18 When they arrived he declared,… ‘Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

“Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church and prayed for them with fasting, turning them over to the care of the Lord in whom they trusted.” Acts 14:27

As you can see from the verses above, as well as many other scriptures in the New Testament, the responsibilities of an Elder are clear:

An Elder is committed to

1. Lead by example

“The Elders who are among you I exhort…be examples to the flock.” I Peter 5:1-4

2. Feed with the Word of God

“The things you have heard from me…commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” 2 Tim. 2:2

“Jesus said to Peter, ‘Feed my sheep’”. John 1:17

3. Prayer for their well-being

“..far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you.” I Samuel 12:23

4. Care for their personal needs

“But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly…for I have no one like-minded who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own and not the things which are of Christ Jesus.” Phil. 2:19,20

Our prayer is that as you plant yourself, and your loved ones, here at the Gathering Place Church, you find it to be a safe place to grow in the Lord
